SEATTLE - A 27-year-old man described as one of the world's top spammers was arrested Wednesday, a development that federal authorities said could lead to an immediate, perceptible decrease in the amount of junk e-mail winging its way across the Web.
"He's one of the top 10 spammers in the world," said Tim Cranton, a Microsoft Corp. lawyer who is senior director of the company's Worldwide Internet Safety Programs. "He's a huge problem for our customers. This is a very good day."
SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - US prosecutors said they captured on Wednesday a nefarious Internet marketer responsible so much junk e-mail they called him "Spam King."
Robert Soloway, 27, was arrested in Seattle, Washington, a week after being indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of identity theft, money laundering, and mail, wire, and e-mail fraud.
"Spam is a scourge of the Internet, and Robert Soloway is one of its most prolific practitioners," said US Attorney for the Western District of Washington Jeffrey Sullivan."Our investigators dubbed him the 'Spam King' because he is responsible for millions of spam emails
ＡＰ通信によると、世界で１０指の１つに入るスパマーが３０日、米連邦捜査当局によってワシントン州シアトルで逮捕された。逮捕されたのはロバート・アラン・ソロウェー（Robert Alan Soloway）という２７歳の男。関係者の間では「スパム・キング」として知られていた。連邦大陪審はこれより先、ソロウェーを窃盗、マネーロンダリング（資金洗浄）、郵便・電信・電子メール偽造の容疑で告発していた。
ワシントン州西部地区のサリバン検事は「スパム行為は、インターネットのガンだ。ロバート・アラン・ソロウェーは、その中でも、最も多くのスパムを連日送り続けるプロフェッショナルの１人だった」と指摘。ＡＰ通信は、これによりインターネット上を飛び交うスパムメールは目に見える形で減ると報じている。
２００３年１１月からこの５月までの間に、ソロウェーが自分のインターネットマーケティング会社宣伝のため送り続けたメールは全世界数千万通に達する。メールアドレスを次々に変えてスパムを繰り返し、これを開封した受信人になりすましてさらにスパムを拡大させていく手口。
０６年に、インターネット上の脅威のベクトルは、メールのウィルスから、高性能なトロイの木馬やスパイウェアに変化。多くの場合、これらに感染したコンピュータは、犯罪者が制御する悪意ある「Botnetsネットワーク」の一部となる。Botnetsは、スパムメールの送信やメールのフィッシング、DoS攻撃などに利用されているが、ソロウェーの犯罪手口がまさにこのBotnetsだった。
有罪が認められれば最大で禁固６５年以上、罰金２５万ドルを科せられる。検察側は、ソロウェーが一連のスパム行為で稼いだ７７万３０００ドルの没収を要求している。
